Interview with DJ Trancid

By Angelique Rickhoff

When did you begin your deejay career?

My hands first touched the decks in 1986, I was about 12. My inspiration to start spinning came from going to church hall parties on the South Side of Chicago and seeing guys like Farley Jackmaster Funk, Bad Boy Bill and other members of the WBMX's Hot Mix Five do it up on the decks. There were other local djs like Chaz D, that also set the pace for me.

You've played at an insane amount of clubs. Care to provide us with a near complete list of your residencies past and present?

There haven't been too many residencies, so I'll just list a few of the venues I have played at....

Lava Lounge, Metro, Smart Bar, Sound Bar, Big Wig, Four, Sonotheque, Darkroom, Congress Theater, The Vic, Green Dolphin Street, Motel Bar, Elbo Room, Double Door, Subterranean, Bar Vertigo, Rodan, there's tons more, but my brain is freezing up on me, needs rebooting.

So you recently played Club Nasa in Iceland. How was that?

It was not entirely what I expected as far as the event was concerned. I guess certain attendees wanted to hear some super cheesy 80's mainstream music which I do not even have in my collection as a joke. But in the end, I did what I always do and got the dance floor moving. It was a great time, and Iceland is a beautiful country with great people.

Name some artists whose tracks frequent your set.

Almost all of my sets include some sort of New Order or Depeche Mode remix of some kind. In rotatation as of late have been remixes of Ladytron, White Rose Movement, Cut Copy, Infadels, Mario Piu, The Egg and other fine tracks to make you shake it.

Any advice for wanna bes?

The best thing to do is observe other djs in action, and practice, practice, practice. Learning to beat match is not hard, it's developing your own style of mixing and music selection that makes you unique.

We host a monthly event called Dark Wave Disco which takes place at Sonotheque. April's event is a big one because we will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary as well as BPM Magazine's May issue release. This will also be the official Kill Hannah afterparty for their show at the House of Blues early on, which I will be deejaying for as well. Our guest dj's for the night will be Steve Aoki from L.A. and Jeremy Dawson of Shiny Toy Guns, along with your residents, Myself, Greg Corner ( Kill Hannah) and the DWD mastermind, Mark Gertz. Live Video by Panic Films.
