Listen to Order of Chaos:

Interview with Sean Payne of Cyanotic

By Angelique Rickhoff

How did you come up with the name Cyanotic?

I was working at an information depot, researching medical histories, and came across the word in some document about a girl who had been locked up and hung herself during a drug lapse. The word "cyanotic" means, "to turn blue", from lack of oxygen or whatever, and that word was in the autopsy report. It just kind of stuck with me. I had 50 lameass band names before, but none of 'em ever really stuck. Cyanotic though, Cyanotic stuck. :-)

Any plans for another big tour this year?

Right now, there are a couple Midwest dates planned for mid March with our buddies in The God Project. Aside from that, there's been a few other propositions, a couple offers "on the table" or whatever, that we are discussing. We are at the point where we need to figure out how much money we can afford to invest, because we are getting tour offers left and right, and while its always been profitable for us to hit the road, it always takes an initial investment of some sort. Gathering that initial investment has been more difficult than usual, mainly because we have been venturing all over the place with our profits, whether its buying gear, helping release other bands like Rabbit Junk, releasing some compilations, paying for shirt and sticker repressing, etc. We just need to make sure we get ourselves on tours that will be beneficial, financially and in terms of getting heard by the right crowds, the people who embrace what we are doing.

Bottom line, we like to get out on the road as much as possible. That's when we really get to see all our hard work pay off, getting to see kids shouting our choruses, pumping fists, etc. Its great to know people are buying the CDs or downloading from our site, but its much more of an intimate affair when you are shouting in these kids faces, and those kids are shouting right back with the lyrics to some chorus.

I heard you are working on another album? How will it be different than Transhuman?

So far, it's a big bastard of electronic noise, lots more stuttering, more glitching, more breakbeats, more chunky bass. Drew has a few guitar parts written, but its mainly been straight programming thus far, no different than before, but much more expanded in terms of experimentation. Its dirty, its digital, its the evolution of our sound. We look at the "Transhuman" album as the introduction to our style mixed with big nods to all our influences, meshing the drum 'n' bass and glitch beats while tipping our hats to bands that got us into making music in the first place, bands like Ministry, FLA, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, etc. The new album is 100% our style, no direct outside influence, just writing whatever comes to us.

Tell us about Glitch Mode.

Glitch Mode Recordings is our little upstart label that we originally concocted to release the Cyanotic E.P., but began expanding upon after "Transhuman" took off and we were earning enough cash from CD sales to afford investing in a couple outside releases, namely the "Modern Destruction" and "Darksonus" compilations. As of a few weeks ago, we are also releasing the 2nd album from Rabbit Junk, which is honestly one of my favorites releases from the last few years. Its one of the most original releases I have ever heard, mixing a bunch of different styles like digital hardcore, hip hop, industrial, new wave and all sorts of other sounds together into this big audio beast that rapes my anus (in the most pleasant way possible).

I've seen the pics! How was being on stage with Chemlab? You've been jumping on stage with quite a few bands; think you'll ever do vocals with another band?

Getting invited onstage for the Chemlab show in NYC was a complete and total honor. I have been rocking Chemlab since my middle school days (at the very last place); so having Jared invite me to belt out some vocals for "Blunt Force Trauma" was a real rush. It's too bad I was so completely drunk out of my mind and didn't remember the flow of the words. Oh well. It was still a pleasant experience none-the-less, and yes, there has been much discussion of lending vocals to a couple other tracks from different bands, but I have always been much more interested in producing other acts, so maybe we can manage both, integrate ourselves like a bunch of hip hop moguls.

Who's your favorite band at the moment?

Oi. There's the definitive question. It really depends on the mood, different sounds for different states, everything from mellow electronic styles like Frou Frou and The Postal Service to underground hip hop like Dalek and Jedi Mind Tricks, to some of the really aces new heavy electronic acts like genCAB, CRTLshift, Darque Science, Casutic, Endif and LiD. "American Automatic" by Kill Memory Crash, that's been a favorite for a while. Three Six Mafia, old Revolting Cocks, Asy9, Gein, Converter, U2. It's all on a constant loop.

What is the current Cyanotic lineup? There's been quite a bit of member swap going on, I can't keep up!

As for the lineup, that's a good question. We never know the live lineup til about 3 weeks before we hit the road. As for studio recordings though, it's always been myself, Drew and a li'l bit of Brian. We are planning to incorporate Brian's work into this new album as much as possible, and the same goes for Chris H-Ski (live guitars), and Jan (Szpila, drums and percussion). Eric from PTI (www.ptinc.net), who did drums for us on the last tour with Acumen Nation and Stromkern, is also going to be co-producing a couple tracks.
